Phono Preamps:
Quietly acquiring an array of magical phono preamps. My advice from experience is to start with the phono preamp, when selecting a vinyl playback system. The phono preamp has the largest influence on the sound. It's all about the weak link.
Parasound ZPhono $200 acurate and clean only lacks dynamics.
Jolida JD9 II $699 full dynamic fun rich sound that will make you love your records.
Quicksilver Phono Preamp $1595 exact extended clean sound that can only come from tubes. This is a new design that has zero web presence. Uses 3 - 12AX7 .Some might like more flexibility but for many cartridges this phono will be the end of your search. Quicksilver spent 2 years making this unit and he feels it's his best work. Quicksilver makes a clean step up transformer if you have a very low output cartridge (below .5)
Parasound JC3+ $2995 a new and improved legend. The notorious Parasound JC3+ phono preamp - follows the design of the John Curl Vendetta.
Parasound JC3+ »
Ayre P-5xe $3250 The best in the shop. Listening with the VPI Prime and Ortofon Black Quintet. This setup makes you grin and then look for another record. Ayre P-5xe
Turntables:
If you are buying new vinyl and want to fully enjoy the sound, purchasing a $1500 turntable makes sense. Yes you can have fun spinning records with the Audio Techica AT120 ($300) - it even has VTA adjustment - and this is a good choice for playing your old records. Outside of this causal spinning, a better system is needed to capture the magic.
VPI Prime $4000 I have not experienced records on this level before - the play back surprises me every time.
